Booknerd Wenesday: The NetGalley Monthly For August 2018!

Throw me a mother effin’ party because I’ve been SO GOOD about not requesting ARCs for the last couple of months.

…Annndddddd hold the applause.

The party will have to end a little early because I started jonesing for a NetGalley fix a couple of nights ago after I had learned I’d been given auto-approval by a publisher that puts out things like Mark Edwards and Caroline Mitchell, and now everything is off the fucking rails again and I am seeing spots.

It’s starts with one hit – aka one push of the “request” button – and next thing you know, you’ve done a dozen more hits and emails start pouring in with approvals (and rejections) and you’re running down the street half-naked, screaming that you’re the new Lizard Queen and all your free books are your babies.

…No? That’s just me? Okay…

I guess what I’m trying to say it that it’s time for another round-up of the new books that have been added to my TBR mountain thanks to NetGalley. My greatest love and my worst enemy.

Honestly, it’s a good thing these TBRs come in ebook form or you wouldn’t be able to see the floor in my house anymore.

🔪Lies by T.M. Logan

Keywords: Secrets and Lies, Hulk Smash, Marriage Boot camp.

Expected Publication: September 18, 2018

Back of the Book: Six days ago, Joe Lynch was a happily married man, a devoted father, and a respected teacher living in a well-to-do London suburb. But that was before he spotted his wife’s car entering a hotel parking garage. Before he saw her in a heated argument with her best friend’s husband. Before Joe confronted the other man in an altercation where he left him for dead, bleeding and unconscious.

Now, Joe’s life is unraveling. His wife has lied to him. Her deception has put their entire family in jeopardy. The man she met at the hotel has vanished. And as the police investigate his disappearance, suspicion falls on Joe.

Unable to trust the woman he loves, Joe finds himself at the mercy of her revelations and deceits, unsure of who or what to believe. All he knows is that her actions have brought someone dangerous into their lives—someone obsessed with her and determined to tear Joe’s world apart.

What if your whole life was based on LIES?

My First Reaction: Here’s a fun little tidbit about me: before I met my husband I dated a world-class douchebag-boob-punch and he cheated on me all. the. time.

I was young and dumb, and didn’t really know what love I deserved or what real love looked like, so I just never did much about his cheating but complain. In hindsight it’s because I actually hated that asshole boyfriend, so him cheating on me meant that he wasn’t touching me.

Okay, I guess this isn’t a “fun” tidbit.

Regardless, being cheated on sucks. And now that I’m married to the love of my life, I will tell you something, if he ever cheats on me, I can totally see myself going hog-wild on him and his side piece. I WILL BURN THIS PLACE TO THE GROUND. So even from this blurb, I feel a kinship to the main character. And I want to read this book so I know what to do and not to do, should I ever need to commit murder assault because of an adulterating spouse.

Hopefully you never see segments of this blog post on a future episode of Dateline.

🔪The Ancient Nine by Ian K. Smith

Keywords: Secret Society, White guys doing shady stuff in matching outfits

Expected Publication: September 18, 2018

Back of the Book: Spencer Collins thinks his life at Harvard will be all about basketball and pre-med; hard workouts and grinding work in class. The friends he’s made when he hits the storied ivy-clad campus from a very different life in urban Chicago are a happy bonus. But Spencer is about to be introduced to the most mysterious inner sanctum of the inner sanctum: to his surprise, he’s in the running to be “punched” for one of Harvard’s elite final clubs.

The Delphic Club is known as “the Gas” for its crest of three gas-lit flames, and as Spencer is considered for membership, he’s plunged not only into the secret world of male privilege that the Gas represents, but also into a century-old club mystery. Because at the heart of the Delphic, secured deep inside its guarded mansion club, is another secret society: a shadowy group of powerful men known as The Ancient Nine.

Who are The Ancient Nine? And why is Spencer—along with his best friend Dalton Winthrop—summoned to the deathbed of Dalton’s uncle just as Spencer is being punched for the club? What does the lore about a missing page from one of Harvard’s most historic books mean? And how does it connect to religion, murder, and to the King James Bible, if not to King James himself?

The Ancient Nine is both a coming of age novel and a swiftly plotted story that lets readers into the ultimate of closed worlds with all of its dark historical secrets and unyielding power.

My First Reaction: Okay first of all, I’m going to be on the BLOG TOUR for this book and I’m super excited about it. Because one, have you ever seen the Paul Walker/Joshua Jackson classic The Skulls? And two…okay, really it’s just because of The Skulls.

I LOVE secret society shit. Old, powerful white guys, putting on their matching robes and doing shady stuff so they can pretend to have the biggest dicks around? Nothing brings me joy like getting to watch truly insecure men attempt to make themselves feel better by acting like total d-bags in their matching robes.

I have high hopes for this one.

🔪Her Last Move by John Mars

Keywords: Serial Killer, Cops and Forensics, Her Partner probably gets a boner for her

Expected Publication: November 8th, 2018

Back of the Book: She’s chasing a killer. He’s watching her every move.

He hides in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment. Each kill is calculated, planned and executed like clockwork.

Struggling to balance her personal and professional life, young DS Becca Vincent has landed the biggest case of her career—and she knows that it will make or break her. But she can’t catch the culprit alone. Together with facial recognition expert Joe Russell, she strives to get a lead on the elusive murderer, who is always one step ahead of them.

Time is not on their side. The body count is rising, and the attacks are striking closer and closer to home. Can Becca and Joe uncover the connection between the murders before the killer strikes the last name from his list?

My First Reaction: I’m a sucker for serial killers being chased by badass female cops, okay? I’m not going to apologize. They aren’t all winners or literary gold, but I still have fun reading them like 98% of the time. I have no idea if this will be good or not, and I can’t even get a feel for it based on a cover because there isn’t one yet. Plus, the blurb is super vague, and done-to-death.

The body count is rising” or “With the body count rising…” is my least favourite phrase of ALL TIME on the backs of crime fiction. I wish people would find a different way to fucking saying it. We are writers after all! I think if I ever wrote a book, I would ban that phrase from the blurb and instead insist they use something like, “bodies are to the windows, to the walls! There’s no sweat on their balls!…because they’re dead.

It’s a work in progress, but it’s catchy!

🔪Can You Keep A Secret? by Unknown

Keywords: I have no idea?

Expected Publication: November 29, 2018

Back of the Book: There’s a stranger in your home…

A haunting and twisty story about the lies we tell those closest to us, perfect for fans of Ruth Ware and Cass Green.

Would you like to hear a story about two little girls who did something bad?

We’re asking you to be brave and request this book without knowing the title or the plot. If you’re approved, you’ll get to read a brand new psychological thriller and we ask that you keep everything secret until Halloween 2018 when we’ll reveal all…

My First Reaction: Okay, yes, I’m so gullible. I totally bought into the “mystery book” shenanigans. I’m saving this one, whatever it is, for one of my Halloween reads this year. It’s never too early to plan. I mean we basically have 3 weeks before school starts back up again. And then it’s just September to get through before we can officially get into the spirit of my favourite holiday ever. I’ve got all kinds of plans for my house and my reading list and even for around this blog. I’m thinking I’ll make a new title banner that’s got bats and pumpkins on it.

Expect the review of whatever the hell this book is, sometime around then.

🔪Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone

Keywords: Revenge, Secret Identity, Willingly touching strange dick for the sake of evil plans

Expected Publication: August 1, 2018

Back of the Book: A double life with a single purpose: revenge.

Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes—meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven.

But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. So she can take it all away.

Just as he did to her.

My First Reaction: I like revenge. I think it’s a form of karma. But I’ve never been so bent on revenge that I would sleep with someone I didn’t really like in order to accomplish it. I don’t know, I’m not a prude by any means, but personally I am so uncomfortable with the idea of random penis that I don’t know really well *shivers*. Keyword there is personally. To each their own.

I am endlessly intrigued by what ever Steven did that would convince Jane to put a strange dick inside herself just to get back at the dick owner. It better be good or I’m not going to buy it.

Nothing beats someone getting the comeuppance they deserve.

🔪Truth and Lies (DI Amy Winters, #1) by Caroline Mitchell

Keywords: Serial Killer Daddy, Mommy Dearest, That’s some baggage

Expected Publication: August 30, 2018

Back of the Book: Meet Amy Winter: Detective Inspector, daughter of a serial killer.

DI Amy Winter is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her highly respected police officer father. But when a letter arrives from the prison cell of Lillian Grimes, one half of a notorious husband-and-wife serial-killer team, it contains a revelation that will tear her life apart.

Responsible for a string of heinous killings decades ago, Lillian is pure evil. A psychopathic murderer. And Amy’s biological mother. Now, she is ready to reveal the location of three of her victims—but only if Amy plays along with her twisted game.

While her fellow detectives frantically search for a young girl taken from her mother’s doorstep, Amy must confront her own dark past. Haunted by blurred memories of a sister who sacrificed herself to save her, Amy faces a race against time to uncover the missing bodies.

But what if, from behind bars, Grimes has been pulling the strings even tighter than Amy thought? And can she overcome her demons to prevent another murder?

My First Reaction: This could not sound any more perfect for me unless the ebook also came with an endless supply of chicken nuggets.

Husband and wife killers with a detective daughter? I mean, Amy Winters is basically living my dream life. I can’t wait to read this.

Not to put too much of a fine point on it, but it better be fucking amazing with a blurb like that.

🔪In Her Shadow by Mark Edwards

Keywords: Family secrets, Suicide or Not? The bitch has it all

Expected Publication: October 4, 2018

Back of the Book: Isabel’s life seemed perfect. Successful business, beautiful house, adoring husband. And then she was dead.

For four years Jessica has never doubted that her sister Isabel’s death was an accident. But when Jessica’s young daughter seems to know long-forgotten details about her aunt’s past, Jessica can’t shake the feeling that there’s a more sinister truth behind the tragedy.

As Jessica unearths disturbing revelations about her sister, and about the people she loved and trusted most, it becomes clear Isabel’s life was less than perfect and that Jessica’s might also be at risk.

Did someone murder Isabel? Are they now after Jessica and her family? The key seems to lie in the hands of a child. Can Isabel reveal the truth from beyond the grave, or is the answer closer to home?

In Her Shadow is a gripping tale of family secrets, lies and obsession from the two million copy bestselling author Mark Edwards.

My First Reaction: Can you believe I’ve never read a Mark Edwards novel before? I know, I know… but I hear the most amazing things and now I’m auto-approved by his publisher, so he and I are about to get to know each other very well.

No, that sounded sexual. Forget I said it that way.

This book is definitely going to be on my Halloween TBR. I love any chilling stories that involves sisters. I have one younger sister. We are polar opposites, and fought like… things that fight a lot… (I’m so tired) when we were kids, but as adults we get along really well.

I think if anything ever happened to her, I would definitely be on the case. But if something ever happened to me, it’s likely she’d forget she was supposed to look into something or figure something out, and then maybe an episode of something would come on and it would be like two weeks later before she was thinking to herself, “was I supposed to find something for Krystin? Or find Krystin? Or Krystin was supposed to find me something?

Like I said, polar opposites.

And that’s it!

That is everything brand new on my NetGalley TBR and just writing out this post has given me serious anxiety about the amount of books I have to read by the end of the year. I’m just kidding! Kind of? Not really…

  1. I love this post! I feel the same about NG! Maybe even the lizard queen but too! 😂 my signal wasn’t good and at first only two books downloaded. I thought that’s not bad! Then it kept going! Still not bad! I have Lies and the new Edwards to read! And I can’t wait for your Ancient Nine stop! Sorry for all the exclamation points. I blame NG!
