I know everyone else is saying this, but I can’t believe it’s May already! What the fuck?
April flew right passed me… and I didn’t even get all that much reading done, to be totally honest, which totally sucks. But, I’ve been up to my eyes in house reno stuff. I swear time is like a downhill snowball the older you get, and I’m not even old!
My husband and I are still trying to get this foyer/mini-mudroom finished. And I’m such an inpatient asshole that I also started painting my upstairs hallway. I’m not good at doing one step at a time, clearly. Also, I’ve spent a lot of money on paintings and lights and carpets and please someone STOP ME BEFORE I DESTROY MY BUDGET!
I took a vacation day from work on Monday and my sincerest hope is that we get something completely done this weekend so I can go back to reading.
Speaking of reading, it’s WWW time!
🔪What I Read Last
I finished BRAVE by Rose McGowan and was totally blown away and emotionally stirred. She had all of my brain cells firing during my journey with her words. It’s a book that everyone should be reading, but especially women.
I didn’t totally agree with all her points (“If you are a fan of something, you’re in a cult…”), but as you get to know her life story, you learn why she would have these opinions; why her world view would be coloured the way that it is.
It’s a super powerful memoir, that will have you feeling like a human being by the end of it. And even if you don’t agree with her stances on the topics she touches on, at the very least you’ll be using your brain; thinking about why you hold the opinions you do. Highly recommend.
You can find my review (which is more of an essay), here.
🔪What I’m Currently Reading
I’m just finishing up THE LAST MRS. PARRISH by Liv Constantine. I should have a review out for it in a couple of days. And yes, I do realize this is the same book I said I was “currently reading” like a month ago. But guys, did you read the part about my house and my projects? April has seriously sucked for reading and this book is now officially three days late in getting back to the library. Oops! Sorry to whoever is waiting for it!
Opinion so far: it reads like a dark Lifetime movie. It’s not particularly thrilling, or even very interesting. Unless there’s a big twist coming (which there had been some hints of,) then this is pretty typical and has been done before, and done way better. There’s also some misogynistic shit that I’m still trying to form a coherent opinion on.
The main character Amber is very flat in terms of personality, aside from her desire to be rich. There’s a lot of description of outfits and jewellery that she’s wearing, or drooling over, but not a lot of actual character development. Kind of like a Lifetime movie, it feels like this book is just mimicking what it thinks it’s supposed to in order to be a good story, and it’s not really working for me.
Sooooo, I guess my reading pace isn’t helped by the fact that my latest picks for reading have turned out to be kind of boring.
🔪What I’ll Read Next
I’m all about THE FIFTH TO DIE by JD Barker. I’m still so surprised that I was approved for an ARC of this! Total fangirl moment.
Back of the Book: Detective Porter and the team have been pulled from the hunt for the Four Monkey Killer by the feds. When the body of a young girl is found beneath the frozen waters of Jackson Park Lagoon, she is quickly identified as Ella Reynolds, missing three weeks. But how did she get there? The lagoon froze months earlier. More baffling? She’s found wearing the clothes of another girl, missing less than two days.
While the detectives of Chicago Metro try to make sense of the quickly developing case, Porter secretly continues his pursuit of 4MK, knowing the best way to find him is to track down his mother. When the captain finds out about Porter’s activities, he’s suspended, leaving his partners Clair and Nash to continue the search for the new killer alone.
I meannnnnnnn, yes please! I’m so looking forward to getting back into it with Detective Porter. I love a gritty, obsessed-to-the-point-of-self-destruction cop. Especially in this gritty, noir-esque horror series Barker has created. My hopes are high.
In other news, the producer of the Sharknado movie series followed my #Bookstagram account (@thefuckingtwist) and I can’t really explain why that makes me so happy, other than I love those stupid movies and it’s amazing that someone who created them found my tiny little account and thought to follow me.
The internet is weird.
Stay safe. Be kind. But, take no shit.
Later, Booknerds ✌️🔪
